In treatment with medical cannabis products, reducing pain and disease-related symptoms is the main focus.

Cannabis sativa L. – a traditional crop and medicinal plant
Cannabis has been cultivated for thousands of years and has long been used for medical purposes. Cannabis plants contain varying amounts and compositions of active compounds. The three main groups are cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. Research in the late 1990s highlighted additional aspects such as the interplay between cannabinoids and terpenes.

Cannabinoids are a collective term for substances that act via cannabinoid receptors. To date, more than 100 cannabinoids have been identified in the cannabis plant. Interestingly, cannabinoids occur not only in cannabis but also in some fungi and bacteria. Among the best-known are THC, CBD, CBC and CBG.

Terpenes are a group of chemical compounds found in many plants, foods and essential oils. They influence aroma, taste and sometimes effects. In cannabis, more than 200 terpenes have been identified, and different varieties contain different profiles and concentrations. Like cannabinoids, terpenes are primarily produced in trichomes (resin glands).

Flavonoids contribute to aroma, color and taste and mainly protect plants from UV radiation. They are commonly consumed through fruits and vegetables. Around 8,000 flavonoids are known, and many are still being researched.
